Valve amps provide a lovely raw vibe, and anything with age has character. Two amps are recorded here. First is a Carlsbro 100 Top from 1974. This is a very powerful 100 watt amp that can get super loud when played through. It is hard to do it justice in normal settings, it needs stadium gigs!
The second amp is a handmade amp that an engineer for the BBC used to test things on in his workshop. It is only about 0.5watt. It utilises 2 ECC82 (one Mazda and one Mullard) valves from the 1960s, with one of them acting as the output power valve. I guess this was never really meant to be a guitar amp, but it works quite well as one for interesting, edgy solos especially as it naturally breaks up into distortion with little gain/volume. Quite amazing and unique.

I plug in a '57 Fender Strat copy and a Fender Squier bass from 1984, but I don't play them. These recordings are about the amp's noise, while just sitting there as if the musicians are going on a tea break!

Before the standard recording I went over the amps with my DIY electromagnetic mic, made out of a guitar pickup, to pick up their unheard electrical characteristics!
